SCHOLARSHIP TYPE

Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD)

  • National Guard or Army Reserve
  • 2 year only
  • Must SMP w/ ARNG or USAR depending on scholarship
  • National Guard or Army Reserve after commission
  • Limited allocation and funding
  • Can use with any GI Bill

Dedicated Army National Guard (ARNG)

  • National Guard only
  • 2 ½ and 3 year scholarships
  • Must SMP with ARNG
  • National Guard only after commission
  • Limited allocation and funding
  • Can not use with chapter 1606/1607 GI Bill

Dedicated Army Reserve (USAR)

  • Army Reserve only
  • 2 ½ and 3 year scholarships
  • Must SMP with USAR
  • Army Reserve only after commission
  • Limited allocation and funding
  • Can not use with chapter 1606/1607 GI Bill

BOTH (ARNG & USAR)

  • Pays tuition or Pays Room & Board (R&B $10,000 max for off campus)
  • Non-revocable (Only MJC cadets may revoke)
  • Should apply before contracting scholarship, but not necessary
  • Minimum requirements as the Four-Year (High School), Three & Two Year (On-Campus), to apply for GRFD Scholarships
  • To be competitive for the GRFD Scholarships, applicant needs to have high GPA, and High APFT scores.

SCHOLARSHIP COMBINATIONS

  • Can use any GI bill with the 2-year GRFD scholarship (GRFD-NG or GRFD-USAR)
  • Can only use active duty (Chapter 30) GI bill with Dedicated National Guard Scholarship.
  • Can not use Chapter 1606/1607 benefits with Dedicated National Guard Scholarship.

MONTGOMERY GI BILL BENEFITS (FULL TIME STUDENTS)

  • Chapter 30 – Federal GI bill. Approximately $1,075/month.
  • Chapter 1606 – National Guard/USAR GI bill. Approx. $309/month for 36 months.
  • Chapter 1607 – Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP). Received from RC service on AD. Multiple periods are combined. 36 months of benefits. 90 days AD service = $430/month; 1-2 years = $645/month; 2 years or more = $860/month.
  • GI Bill Kicker – Veterans Administration program. $350/month; must be receiving 1606 benefits. Not all RC soldiers qualify. Soldier does not contribute to this program.

MONTGOMERY GI BILL QUALIFICATIONS (SUMMARY)

  • Note: this is a summary only. View websites listed below for details.
  • Chapter 30 – Requires 2 or more years of AD (mobilized RC soldiers can qualify). Soldier pays $1,200 into the program (lump payment or twelve, $100 allotments).
  • Chapter 1606 – For traditional RC soldiers (“M” day soldiers). Must agree to serve at least six years in the RC; complete basic & AIT (MOSQ), actively drilling, have a high school diploma or the equivalent. Soldier does not contribute to this program.
  • Chapter 1607 – For RC soldiers who served on AD for 90 days or more since 11 September 2006, or who were released if due to sickness or injuries received on active duty. Multiple AD periods are combined. Soldier does not contribute to this program
  • GI Bill Kicker – Must receive 1606 benefits (1607 does not qualify). Applies to OCS/WOC/SMP cadets. Must have deployable MOS, assigned to a MTOE position, be actively drilling for at least three years, continues to drill, have high school diploma or equivalent, have six years remaining on enlistment (or extends), grade no greater than E5 or O1. Applies to officers who have completed BOLC II & III. Must not have used a kicker previously. Based on available funding; not an entitlement.
